End of season review

It will soon be time to hang up our mallets as far as outdoor play goes, but we can look forward to indoor croquet and socialising at Fitism (formerly Born 2 MOVE ), still with the same management of Matt and Sarah and still providing delicious, healthy soup and rolls .

This year members have been using the cricket pavilion for tea and biscuit breaks also entertaining visiting clubs when playing league matches.

We have greatly appreciated the new tables, chairs and kitchen, provided by the football club.

A charity event was held at Ashford cricket club for Bakewell Rotary club, who have asked if we can do the same again next year, I’m sure we can.

Fifteen members visited Brodsworth hall to play on their lawns, there was also a trip to Snitterton Hall, both were thoroughly enjoyed.

A group of about twelve members are off next month to Ripon Spa Hotel for a few days of croquet, sightseeing and socialising .

Membership has grown to forty members.

Last year’s 10th anniversary dinner held at Bakewell golf club was such a success that we have booked for next year to mark our 11th.

There is to be a walk in January followed by lunch at a local hostelry.

Club Update

rainbow_websiteAs can be seen on our calendar page the club has  a full program for the summer, in addition to the regular club sessions where we recently saw this rainbow overhead. Here are some of the things we have been doing over the last month or so.

thank you for gobokaGobaka Rwanda Trust

In may the club provided a croquet evening for around thirty people raising funds in aid of the Gobaka Rwanda trust, which was held in the garden of one of the trustees.  The food was delicious and the play energetic, inventive and competitive, a fun evening for a good cause.

We received a letter of thanks which can be seen on the right.

Ripon Spa Hotel

Also in May around a dozen members had an outing to the Ripon Spa hotel for a few days of socialising and games of croquet on the hotels’s championship quality lawns. The weather could have been warmer but it didn’t spoil the enjoyment.

Tansley School

Four afternoon sessions at Tansley school with members of the croquet club introducing the children to a form of croquet. An annual event that we have been requested to do for several years.

Snitterton Hall

In June we had an afternoons playing on the lawns at Snitterton Hall.

Club Tournament (May 2015)

Our first club tournament took place on Saturday 30th May with Bill Robinson coming first with 27 hoops and second, on 26 hoops, shared by Louis McMeeken and Steve Marsh. It was a lovely afternoon with 23 people taking part. Many thanks to the people who brought cakes and savouries for us all to enjoy.

IMG_20150530_154817_hdr There is another tournament on Saturday 22nd August. Although taking place over the afternoon players just play 5
x 30minute games so there is lots of opportunity to chat, have a cuppa and a piece of cake or two.

10th Anniversary Dinner & Award

It is now Bakewell Croquet Clubs tenth birthday! So a celebration was held at the Bakewell Golf Club, with thirty five  members present.

BandWe enjoyed a delicious meal in a warm and friendly atmosphere. After the meal, Steve and Nadia Marsh (two of our members) treated us to a delightful and varied musical concert. This talented duo played classical guitar and recorder pieces some of which were Steve’s own composition, followed by an Abba selection. To conclude, they were joined by Alan Reeves on clarinet for a lively jazz session.

AwardDuring the evening, Alan was presented with an award from the Croquet Association, for services to croquet. It was his hard work and dedication that brought the club into being.

Throughout the winter, the club were fortunate to be able to practice and socialize at BORN 2 MOVE, an up to the minute fitness centre in Bakewell.

Hopefully winter is behind us and croquet proper will soon start on the recreation ground. Anyone who would like to have a go will be made most welcome.
